Volunteers of America Chesapeake, 2019 Voice of Faith Event
For the past 40 years, Volunteers of America Chesapeake has been working to address widespread homelessness and the critical gap in affordable housing in Baltimore and Maryland and lower barriers to gainful employment for those living in high-poverty areas through their supportive housing and workforce development programming. As an emerging nonprofit developer, VOA Chesapeake also partners with local developers and businesses to build affordable housing units. To help build on their momentum and expand VOA Chesapeake’s presence in the community, our firm was tasked with rebranding and organizing VOA Chesapeake’s annual VOICE of Faith fundraiser in support of their supportive housing and workforce development programs in Maryland.
Our strategy involved changing the style of the event from a traditional fundraising breakfast to an evening cocktail reception and networking opportunity at The Center Club in Baltimore with the goal of targeting local leaders in development, business, philanthropy and government interested in addressing the economic and social disparities in the region. We worked with VOA Chesapeake to build an external event committee made up of new and long-standing partners to enhance outreach. And we incentivized new and existing event sponsors by offering them access to a VIP meet & greet happy hour ahead of the event with key decision-makers from government, including newly elected Baltimore City Council President Brandon Scott.
After months of preparation, this year’s VOICE of Faith event proved to be far more successful than last year’s. Thanks to our efforts, we achieved VOA Chesapeake’s fundraising goal of $50,000, approximately 66 percent more than last year. The highest level sponsorships came for current and first-time donors, including Kaiser Permanente and Cap Grow Partners. We also amassed 120 attendees, exceeding last year’s numbers by more than 30 people.
Volunteers of America Chesapeake, Harvest for Hope
As a faith-based, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s mission is to inspire self-reliance, dignity and hope through health and human services. Founded in Baltimore in 1896, Volunteers of America Chesapeake is one of 31 Volunteers of America affiliates across the United States developing evidence-based programs and sharing best practices to house and serve more than 2.5 million at-risk individuals and families. Our firm was brought on board in July 2018 to enhance and manage VOAC’s development efforts including Harvest for Hope, the organization’s signature fundraising event.
Our strategy for helping VOAC reach its fundraising goal for Harvest for Hope involved aggressively re-engaging existing donors and corporate partners. By leveraging our extensive network of leaders in business and government, we also helped the organization cultivate new supporters, include The Capital Group. Our Creative Team also played an integral role in enhancing the overall quality of the event’s visual brand.
Within just two months, MD Strategic Consulting raised nearly $90,000 from donations and 15 corporate sponsorships, exceeding last year’s results by thousands of dollars. As a result of our targeted outreach, more than 200 people attended the event.
Maryland Association of Counties (MACo), “The MACo Party”
The Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) is a non-profit and non-partisan organization that serves Maryland’s counties by articulating the needs of local government to the Maryland General Assembly. The Association’s membership consists of county elected officials and representatives from Maryland’s 23 counties and Baltimore City. MDSC has planned, executed and hosted “The MACo Party” during MACo’s annual summer conference in Ocean City, MD, and it has been a great opportunity for attendees to meet business leaders, key decision makers and movers/shakers from all over the state.
As a result of MDSC’s outreach, social media promotion and targeted branding, in the past three years, we have had over 600+ attendees at the event in what has become one of the largest and most fun networking events of the conference.
Pride of Baltimore, 40th Anniversary Sailabration
Pride of Baltimore, Inc. consulted with MD Strategic Consulting in 2017 in preparation for their 40th anniversary and the organization’s premiere annual event, Sailabration. MD Strategic Consulting created a marketing strategy that incorporated other “prides” of Baltimore including BGE, Brewer’s Art, Phillip’s Seafood, and many more. Using this strategy, MD Strategic Consulting successfully targeted and brought on corporate and local business sponsors. Much of the food, beverage, silent auction items, and more were ultimately donated by local restaurants, businesses, and corporations that call Baltimore home.
With more than 400 people in attendance, 2017’s Sailabration was the Pride of Baltimore’s most successful event in its history, raising thousands of dollars to support the Pride and its programs, and developed new supporters and partners for the nonprofit to leverage.
Alice Ferguson Foundation, Pinot on the Potomac
In order to improve turnout and income for one of its premier events in 2015, The Alice Ferguson Foundation turned to MD Strategic Consulting. By rebranding their ‘Summer Garden Party’ as ‘Pinot on the Potomac’ and by conducting aggressive corporate and individual outreach, MD Strategic Consulting played an integral role in dramatically increasing revenues, attendance, and overall event quality.
MD Strategic Consulting helped the foundation to partner with local Maryland wineries, implemented a marketing strategy that attracted large crowds, and conducted public affairs outreach to ensure the presence of elected officials and business leaders. The newfound revenue was reinvested back into the work of the foundation.
City of Seat Pleasant
MSDC was the front line of communication and marketing for the City of Seat Pleasant, the only genuine SMART City in Prince George’s County and the state of Maryland. We handled press for their SMART City Campaign, the Mayor’s speaking engagements, and the annual State of the City address. In addition, MDSC handled crisis management, acting as a spokesperson for the City.
Working directly with the Mayor, MDSC helped to create a positive narrative for the City through targeted press releases and media advisories. MDSC was a key communications agent for the 2017 Kevin Durant Day that brought over 3,000+ attendees to the City of Seat Pleasant to meet and greet NBA Star, Kevin Durant.
City of New Carrollton
Having a social media presence is KEY to promoting your business. The same is true for municipalities. MDSC worked with the City Manager to promote the key services, departments and events in the City via New Carrollton’s social media channels.
As a result, MDSC helped to maintain relationships with business, non-profit and community leaders on behalf of the City. To support the City’s messaging, MDSC represented the City of New Carrollton at events to engage residents, local business owners and followers via social media.
American Traffic Solution (ATS)
ATS, along with several national competitors responded to an RFP for road safety camera systems for the City of Baltimore, a program that had been attempted and halted in previous years by the city.
MD Strategic Consulting worked with ATS to bring together a coalition of locally owned minority and women business enterprises to engage the community and government officials to address previous concerns.
For nearly 2 years the group worked to provide a comprehensive plan of operation for the RFP and in the end won the contract to operate speed camera enforcement systems that will increase public safety (particularly around schools) and revenue for the City of Baltimore.
